Ekaterinburg – the capital of Ural, metal industry center. The city was founded in 1723 by Peter The Great’s decree. He delegated Tatischev and De Genin to find the place appropriate for iron-making plant on the Iset-river. So the castle-plant Ekaterinburg appeared, named to the Peter’s wife honor. Ekaterinburg is unique in distant location – it is on the border between Europe and Asia.
The last members of royal Romanov family had spent here their last days, and then they were shooted in the Ipatiyev’s house basement. The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (Tserkovʹ Spasa na Krovi) was erected in this place in memory of tragedy. It is situated on the Voznesenskaiya Gorka, from which one can explore beautiful scenery. Ganina Yama has to be mentioned. After shooting relics of royal family were brought here. Seven chapels were later constructed at the site.
Old-time mansions are persisting in the historical center of Ekaterinburg: Sevastyanov’s, Zheleznov’s, Davydov’s, Poklevskyh-Kozel’s, Agafurov’s. Mansion of Rastorguev-Kharitonov, situated in the Voznesenskaiya Gorka, is the most famous by legends about conduits under the park.
The Kasli cast iron pavilion is the only in the world of architectural structure of cast iron located in the museum’s collection. Top 25 Ural masters have manufactured Pavilion for the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Now it is in the Ekaterinburg Fine Arts Museum.
In 1920 the global reconstruction of Sverdlovsk (soviet name of the city) started. Buildings appeared at this time represent an architectural style – constructivism. Such as Chekist Village, Dom Kontor, White Tower (Belaya Bashnya), sport center “Dinamo”.
A plenty of funny monuments surprises the travelers, like monument to the keyboard on the city’s Embankment, monument to the ventilator, monument to Michael Jackson on Vainera street (Ekaterinburg’s Arbat), monument to the invisible man and many others art objects.
In spite of the fact, that Ekaterinburg is located between Europe and Asia, European way of life is vernacular for the city. Bar culture is successfully developing here. There is about 200 bars and pubs ready to take in visitors. Waiters can easily communicate with you in English in central pubs and restaurants. Foreigners took a fancy to English pubs: Rosy Jane, Doctor Scotch, James, Ugly Coyote (Gadkiy Coyote), XXXX bar, Alibi, Boris Papa bar, Fireside and in the first jazz club in Ekaterinburg Everjazz. And just new opened Chuck Norris Bar.
